Unveiled"

Have you ever heard of the Bell Witch of Adams,
Tennessee? I am referring to one of the most widely-
documented ghost stories of all time. To put it simply, a
strange spirit haunted the family of John and Lucy Bell
starting in 1817. After three years of this poltergeist-type
activity, John Bell mysteriously died. The spirit claimed
the credit for killing off John Bell. Then it continued its
tortuous activities until Bell’s teenage daughter, Betsy,
finally agreed to break her engagement to Joshua
Gardner. Only then did the poltergeist leave. It
returned to resume its haunting for a two-week period
in 1828 and then promised to return in 107 years. It never
did keep that promise. Or did it? Some people in
Adams, Tennessee, feel that the spirit who came to be
called the Bell Witch resides there yet.

Many Middle Tennesseans are still fearful of the Bell
Witch as it was commonly believed that a poltergeist
randomly selected a pure of spirit, God-fearing man
upon whom to inflict its venom. Until now, no one knew
why the Bell family was the one chosen for this dubious
honor. As this performance suggests, there was actual
rhyme and reason to this haunting for John Bell
allegedly murdered two men and provoked a third into
not being able to rest in peace. Strangely enough, it was
not these three men who received the credit. Instead, a
woman still living at the time, Cate Batts, often spelled
Kate, received the blame.

Cate Batts possessed many psychic abilities including
that of being a healer. She never used her spiritual gifts
for anything but good. So why did she get the finger of
blame?
Wouldn’t it be incredible if Cate Batts herself could briefly return to the earth
plane and answer that question and many more? Wouldn’t it be astounding if
all the key characters who played a role in this saga, (i.e., Cate Batts, John and
Lucy Bell, and the three poltergeists), could actually tell you from their
perspective what happened in those long ago years? This first-person
performance piece, told in the words of Cate Batts, will give an alternate
viewing point of what could have truly taken place. The performance will
theorize who the actual perpetrators were and why.

I invite you to delve into the world of the Bell Witch. It is possible that you will
never view life or death quite the same again.
